August 2005

+ Hot! Humid! Too Hot! +

"Not so hot" was one of the reasons I came to Ottawa. However it was so hot during the summer! The days which the temperature was over 30 degrees were far from my image of Canada! Where am I? Is here really Canada? I always thought Ottawa's summer finished early. But I was wrong. An air conditioner is a necessary appliance in Ottawa!

This high temperature caused thunderstorm at night. One day, a very big thunderstorm came. I felt a little bit scared. I unplugged all of my appliances and put all of my important things such as my passport, my raptop PC, and my money into my backpack. I finished preparing to run away and turned on the radio to get some information. But I couldn't hear anything from the radio because, you know, the radio had noise and it was difficult to get good signal. Sorry, I told you a lie. Only I just couldn't understand English. I changed the channel to find some easy English. The next channel was French. What could I do?

+ Changing of the Guard +

I watched the changing of the guard ceremony. Before the ceremony, a government officer introduced the ceremony at Parliament Hill. After the announcement, I heard the brass band. The guards came to Parliament Hill with a brass band. They looked cute. Their costumes were like toys. (I mean, these words are in good meaning, sorry my limited vocabulary. They were cool, unique, traditional, and elaborate.) The atmosphere was a little bit British. After the ceremony, they went back to a government building. I went along with them to the end point because I was interested in what they do after the ceremony. The leader announced the end of ceremony to the guards. The atmosphere became cool immediately. Some visitors took friendly pictures with them. And they got on the bus and went somewhere. Did you know that the guards come and go back by bus!

+ Sign Language +

I took an ASL intensive course prepared by a Deaf organization. But on the first day in the morning, my bicycle chain snapped! It was the first time it happened in my life. I ran, ran and ran. I arrived on time and out of breath. Why did something special happen when I tried to learn Sign Language? :-P

That class was a one week summer intensive course for beginners. It was a little bit easy for me but it was a good chance to connect with Canadian Deaf culture. I got an A. Yeah! And I got information about Canadian Deaf culture. I had a good time.

+ My Tongue Had a Pain! +

The language exchange was going smoothly! I have improved my English. Now I can get a chicken burger! Recently, I had a wonderful feeling. I felt a muscle ache in my tongue! I believed that it was proof that my English became better. As you know, the pronounciation system, I mean how to use the tongue, is different between English and Japanese. I thought that the reason for my muscle ache was that my tongue had gotten used to speaking English. I was sure even though I am not an anatomy expert. I must remember this wonderful ache. I wish I will become a good English speaker after this muscle ache.
